My fiance who lives in the Orange County, California found a poodle roaming around his neighborhood. The poodle was scared and huddled next to the side of a house when my Fiance saw him. He was dirty with matted hair and seemed lost for at least a few days.
He took the poodle home with him and I drove over to his house to see the little guy. He was obviously someone's dog once but he wasn't wearing a collar so we had no idea how to find his owner. My fiance fed him and cleaned him up.
We then decided to put up signs to find the owner. We took a photo, made fliers and drove around posting them in the neighborhood.
A few days past with no response. My fiance decided to call the Humane Society to pick up the poodle. He thought maybe the owners would go there to search for him or maybe someone would adopt him. He told the Humane Society employee that if no one claimed or adopted the poodle to contact him and he would take the poodle back.
A few more days past and my fiance received a phone call from a little girl about her poodle. She had seen the signs and recognized her dog. My fiance told her that he was at the Humane Society and that was the last he heard from the little girl. It turned out when my fiance contacted the Humane Society they had put the poodle down. They said the poodle was in no shape to be adopted. We were shocked and angry to say the least. My fiance had specifically told them to contact him if no one wanted the poodle and that he would take him back. Why would they just kill a poor scared little poodle when there was someone willing to take care of him. I feel so upset when I think of that sweet innocent poodle. He must have been so scared when he was lost from his home. I think about how frightened he must have been at the Humane Society and the moments before his death. The poodle did not deserve such a horrible ending. He could have returned to his home if the Humane Society had just made one phone call. Just a single call. Instead they decided to just kill. Kill a little girl's dog. Kill a dog that already had someone willing to take him in.
After that experience I learned NEVER to bring a lost dog to the Humane Society if I want to save him/her. I hope if anyone has a dog they love they get them micro chipped. If that is out of your budget then at least have them wear a collar with tags. Make sure they have the collar on all the time because you never know when they can accidently slip out of your home. Please don't have a story that ends like this, take care of your dog and make sure he can be found if he is lost.
