Hands Free Cell Phone - Fight the Power

The hands-free cell phone law that kicked into effect on July 1, 2008 has had a dramatic impact on my driving experience. It has been more of a nuisance than anything else. Talking on the phone while driving has allowed me to ignore the frustrations of driving among idiots. It is an avenue to ignore some of the moronic drivers that brings out the road rage in some of us. Anyway, I have been resistant to the changes in the law. I refuse to spend $40 on a Bluetooth device that claims a talk time of 8 hours, but in reality is less than that. The frustration of having to buy batteries to replenish my talking needs was too much to handle. In an effort to save money on having to buy the Bluetooth device, along with the endless batteries, I found a cheaper alternative in satisfying my talking needs. I developed this technique utilizing the knowledge and skills obtained from years of schooling, and surprisingly the gym. I call my invention the headband talker.

Without inhibition you too can utilize this technique. I have included pictures of my technique for demonstration purposes, because I feel that the idea can be better conveyed through images. Without further ado, here are the instructions. First, take a look around yourself to make sure no one is watching when you enter your car. It is better to park far away from any building structure to ensure that no one is parked next to you. After checking to make sure you are in the clear, stretch your headband over your head and wear it as you normally would when exercising at the gym (doesn’t everyone wear one at the gym?). Next, cock one side (your preference) of the headband down towards your ear. After getting a comfortable fit slide your cellphone between your head and the headband. Finally, make sure the fit is snug to avoid having your phone slide off during the drive. Talk away.

I agree that this new hands free cell phone law is a nuisance. Talking on the phone while driving home through traffic made the drive seem a lot quicker. It really helped past the time. I always felt the drive home from work was a waste of time so I utilized it by catching up with friends. In my busy schedule it worked out well since my friends were usually on their way home as well.

I refuse to spend more money on a bluetooth headset than I did on my cellphone which is nada. I had a bluetooh headset once (that i got for free) but it annoyed me to have this thing hanging on my ear. Unfortunately, I do not have the luxury of having a well insultated car so the bluetooth was never loud enough to hear what the other person was saying. I am sure if I paid for a blue tooth it would be much better and I could probably hear but why should I pay for a blue tooth? It's like getting a computer for free with speakers and paying for a really nice pair of headphones.

So what I have been doing if my phone rings while I am driving? I put it on speaker phone. I can't hear the other person clearly and sometimes I even forget I am not suppose to hold my phone. I am paying more attention in adjusting my cellphone and making sure I am not breaking the law than if I just put it on my ear and talk.

Now I know there are many many people who just should not be driving and talking on their cellphones. Should people who are able to multitask be punished because a few troublemakers can't accept their inabilities?

I am sure I will eventually accept this hands free cellphone law but I guess I will kick and scream like a big baby first.
